British Airways cabin bag size: the cabin bag and the handbag
Amalia
The British Airways cabin bag size is 56 x 45 x 25 cm, including wheels and handles, and you can bring a second, smaller bag of up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm, such as a handbag or backpack. Both are included on every BA fare, Economy Basic too. The cabin bag goes in the overhead locker; the handbag goes under the seat in front of you.
Because the smaller bag is only 15 cm deep, a slim bag does better than a stuffed one. Our Urbino shoulder bag, 40 x 29 x 12 cm, sits within that size and still fits a 15-inch laptop. The rules below were checked on British Airways' website on 6 November 2026.

Checked 6 November 2026 on British Airways' baggage essentials page, for flights operated by British Airways, BA Cityflyer and BA Euroflyer. Allowances change; check your booking before you fly.
Is the BA cabin bag allowance the same on every fare?
Yes. British Airways lists the same two hand bags for every cabin, from the hand baggage only fare (Economy Basic) to First: one hand bag of up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm and one cabin bag of up to 56 x 45 x 25 cm. What changes between fares is the hold allowance. On Economy Basic, no checked bag is included and BA charges to put a bag in the hold.
The exception is a flight operated by another airline. BA says that on codeshare flights, booked with a BA flight number but operated by a partner, the number and weight of bags may be different. On a journey that mixes airlines, the allowance is generally set by the airline operating the longest flight, so check which carrier is named on your itinerary. BA's baggage calculator also shows a larger hand bag, 45 x 36 x 20 cm, on routes to and from Brazil, so run your own route through it.
Why does the small bag matter more than the big one?
On British Airways, the small bag is the one that is guaranteed to stay with you. BA describes the cabin bag as one that may need to go in the hold, and asks you not to pack valuables, electronics or essential medicines in it. The hand bag is where those belong: BA names medication, mobile phones, other electronic devices and passports.
So the practical rule is simple. Your laptop, chargers, medicine and documents go in the 40 x 30 x 15 cm bag, and the 56 x 45 x 25 cm bag carries what you could live without for an hour at baggage reclaim. BA also says power banks and spare batteries must travel in hand baggage, never in a checked bag.
What happens if your BA bag is too big?
British Airways says that if you have more than two pieces of hand baggage, or they are over the permitted size, you may have to put the larger bags in the hold as checked baggage. The BA cabin bag size includes wheels and handles, so a wheeled case loses a few centimetres to them. A soft bag has no wheels to count, but it grows as you fill it, so measure it packed.
Weight is handled differently from the low-cost airlines. The hand baggage rules on BA's page are written as sizes, plus one practical condition: you must be able to lift the cabin bag into the overhead locker without help.
What this means for your bag
We checked our own range against both BA sizes, using the dimensions listed on each product page on 6 November 2026. Of 195 bag models that list all three dimensions in centimetres, 188 sit within the 56 x 45 x 25 cm cabin bag size, and 129 sit within the 40 x 30 x 15 cm hand bag size. Only 11 of those 129 list a 15-inch laptop in what they fit. The 15 cm depth is what rules most bags out, not the length.
The Urbino is one of the eleven. It is a vegan leather shoulder bag of 40 x 29 x 12 cm with a polyester lining, a slot pocket, a phone pocket and a zip pocket, and its product page lists a 15-inch laptop, a water bottle and A4 documents. Worth knowing: at 40 cm long it uses all of BA's length allowance, so there is no margin if you hang anything from the handles.
The counter-example is a useful one. Our Daily underseat backpack measures 40 x 30 x 20 cm according to its product page, 5 cm deeper than BA's hand bag. On most British Airways routes it counts as your cabin bag, which leaves room for a slim handbag alongside it.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a British Airways cabin bag?
A British Airways cabin bag can measure up to 56 x 45 x 25 cm (22 x 18 x 10 in), including wheels and handles, and goes in the overhead locker. You also get a hand bag of up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm for under the seat. Both are included on every fare, according to BA's website on 6 November 2026.
Can I take a handbag and a cabin bag on British Airways?
Yes. British Airways allows one cabin bag and one hand bag per passenger on every fare, including Economy Basic. The hand bag can be a handbag or backpack of up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm, and it must fit easily under the seat in front of you.
What is the British Airways underseat bag size?
The British Airways underseat bag, which BA calls the hand bag, is 40 x 30 x 15 cm (16 x 12 x 6 in). It must fit easily under the seat in front of you. At 15 cm deep it is shallower than many underseat backpacks, so a 20 cm-deep one counts as your cabin bag on most BA routes.
Is a 55 cm case a cabin size on British Airways?
Usually, yes. British Airways allows a cabin bag of up to 56 cm in height, so a 55 cm case fits on that side. The other two sides must stay within 45 cm and 25 cm, and the measurement includes wheels and handles, so check the full outside dimensions, not the size printed on the label.
Will my BA cabin bag go in the hold?
It may. British Airways says the cabin bag may need to go in the hold, while the smaller hand bag is guaranteed in the cabin. That is why BA asks you to keep valuables, electronics and essential medicines out of the cabin bag and in the hand bag instead.
In short
If you fly British Airways, you have two bags to work with on any fare: 56 x 45 x 25 cm overhead and 40 x 30 x 15 cm under the seat. Put everything you cannot be parted from in the small one, and choose it slim rather than deep. If you are weighing up whether to add a hold bag at all, our guide to choosing between a cabin bag and a checked bag goes through it trip by trip.
